A Handbook of Diagnosis and Treatment of Autism
This book is of huge importance to Guardians, Doctors, Psychologists who have responsibilities to supporting and treating Autistic Ward/s
This book is meant to be read by parents and guardians of children afflicted by this disability. It will help them to become aware, get ready to bestow care and devote attention for as long as they possibly can to ease the hardship the surrounding society is likely to throw on their autistic son/daughter.
Child specialists, child psychologists, physicians, pediatricians, neurologists, speech & language pathologists, professional support personnel besides parents and guardians will find the book quite useful. They can advice guardians to become familiar with the contents of the book to serve 24x7 as a practical companion in the service of the autistic ward.
Written in a simple layman's language, devoid of any technical complexities, this modestly priced book implores that the afflicted person, or for that matter their guardians also, has to learn to live with it and compromise with the situation as faced.
It has to be understood that it is not the child's fault. He is born with it. He has to be accepted 'as is'. Society also has to be forbearing with this condition.
The book tells readers that symptoms of this disability start appearing by or before the age of three.
The condition affects the normal brain function characterized by social impairments, communication difficulties, restricted and repetitive behavior.
Children may fail to respond to their names and often avoid eye contact with other people. They have difficulty interpreting what others are thinking because they can't understand social cues. Boys are four times more likely to be adversely affected than girls.
The book comes up with practical solutions to problems that may crop up from time to time. Unlike other books that carry only western ideas, this one is written by an Indian and covers Indian settings with focus on Indian options.
A list of addresses has been given at the end of the book to be made use of if and when a problem appears that warrants immediate attention.

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES FOR ENGINEERING UNDERGRADUATES
ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES FOR ENGINEERING UNDERGRADUATES
Authors: DR. SUSHMITHA BASKAR & DR. R. BASKAR
Published by: Unicorn Books (www.pustakmahal.com)
With environment occupying the center stage of most newspapers and the world watching the unfolding events, a new book Environmental Sciences for Engineering Undergraduates attempts to explain all that an educated person is expected to know. Although admittedly written for graduate engineering students, topics covered will fulfil the requirements of those appearing in competitive examinations.
Each chapter illustrates interesting global case studies, but with special emphasis on India. Figures have been simplified to make comprehension easy. Interesting facts and references make this book invaluable.
The book has been divided into six units. The first unit covers environment, its components and an overview of the environmental problems today. Second unit introduces ecology, and the principles of environmental impact assessment. Unit three covers atmospheric composition, energy balance, climate, weather, and dispersion. The fourth unit describes hydrosphere, water pollution and its control.Next unit elaborates lithosphere, pollutants, collection and disposal of solid wastes. Various aspects regarding noise pollution, its effects and control is explained in the sixth unit.

He was awarded the ICSC World Laboratory scholarship to carry out research in France for a year during his doctoral programme. He has been teaching in the Department of Environmental Sciences, Guru Jambheshwar University, Hisar, since 1995. AN EXCERPT FROM THE BOOKEcology:Our planet Earth is a lovely beautiful white and blue ball when seen from space. It is the third planet from the Sun and it is the largest of the inner planets. It is the only planet known to support life and to contain liquid water at the surface. Our environment includes the biotic (living beings) and abiotic factors (like soil, water, temperature and light). The various segments of the environment consist of the atmosphere, lithosphere, biosphere and the hydrosphere. The surface of the Earth (air, water and land) is called the biosphere. It is composed of smaller units called the ecosystems. An ecosystem includes all the organisms and the non-living environment found in a particular place. They can be large or small. Our Earth hosts a variety of living organisms and the surface of the Earth, as a whole is an ecosystem. Each organism depends in some way on other living and nonliving things in its environment. The study of natural ecosystems will help us to understand the interrelations between living beings and the environment and how the impact of human beings is influencing the natural world. Ecological case studies:1. Dwindling biodiversity in the Sariska Tiger Reserve, Rajasthan:Poaching of the wild animals like leopards, tigers and other animals for skin, fur, natural resources, etc. in Sariska coupled with high amount of mining related problems, as the area is rich in dolomite, limestone, schist, marble and quartzite have led to severe ecological problems. There are over 200 mines in the protected forest area and more than 40 mines in the partly protected areas. The Sariska reserve, amidst the Aravallis, covers over 800 sq km of dry tropical forests. ‘Dhok’ is the principal tree species that covers 90% of the entire area and there are a variety of grasses and shrubs. This reserve supports over 100 species of birds and has the largest population of peafowl in the entire country. Leopards, Caracals, Sambar, Nilgai, Chital, Wild boar are found in this sanctuary. A rare feature of the fauna is the four horned antelope. Eco-development programs have just been implemented in Sariska with the formation of forest protection societies in villages and NGO’s. The future of Sariska reserve lies directly in protecting and reducing the high biotic pressure that affects this unique Aravalli habitat of the Indian tigers. 2. Declining biodiversity in the wonderful Australian Woodlands:It is predicted that over the next 50 to 100 years there will be a wave of bird extinctions paralleling the loss of many Australian mammal species witnessed earlier this century. The reason for bird species decline is due to practices such as hunting, predation or competition from introduced species and due to loss of habitat. The present case study is related to temperate woodland ecosystems and the birds dependent on them for habitat. Impacts on bird populations provide typical examples of the indirect pressures on biodiversity. Woodlands are distinguished from coastal forests and semi-arid lands by less marked seasonal variations in temperature, lower extremes of rainfall and a longer growing season. Woodland birds have evolved in response to the year-round availability of food and the variety of habitat features such as tree hollows, peeling bark, nectar and other carbohydrates provided by the predominant eucalyptus plant species. The year-round supply of food also means the forests are linked to surrounding habitats, as they are suitable for migratory birds, breeding or when food is scarce elsewhere in times of drought. More than 25% of land bird species found in woodlands are in decline or threatened. The paradise parrot and star finch are extinct. Endangered species include Regent honeyeaters, bush stone-curlew, squatter pigeon, superb parrot, swift parrot, turquoise parrot, gray-crown babbler, painted honey-eater and black-throated finch. In total, 16 woodland-dependent or woodland-associated species are threatened and many more are in decline, as concepts of conservation of ecosystems have not been scientifically followed.Components of ecology The term ecology is derived from two Greek words, oikos meaning dwelling place and logos meaning study. So ecology means the study of organisms in their home. The term ecology was termed by the German biologist Ernst Haeckel (1868). He defined ecology as the ‘surrounding outer world’, now called the environment. E.P.Odum (1969) defined the term ecology as the study of interrelationships between organisms and environment. Ecology is the study of interactions between organisms (biotic part) and their nonliving environment (abiotic factors). Ecology involves collecting information about organisms and their environment, looking for patterns, and seeking to explain these patterns. Habitat is the place a plant or animal lives, while its niche is the specific place it occupies in an ecosystem. Thus, an ecosystem is the living organisms and the chemical and physical environment and ecology is the study of ecosystems. Living things are organized in an ecosystem by how they secure their food: autotrophs or heterotrophs. A very important factor determining the number and type of organisms living in an ecosystem is the amount of energy available. The amount of energy an ecosystem receives and the amount that is transferred from organism to organism has an important effect on the ecosystem’s structure. All organisms need energy to carry out essential functions, such as growth, movement, maintenance and repair, and reproduction. Energy in an ecosystem flows from the sun to autotrophs (producers) then to organisms that eat the autotrophs, then to organisms that feed on other organisms. The primary source of energy for an ecosystem is the sun. EcosystemEcosystems are ecological units that include all the biotic factors and abiotic factors in an area. E. P. Odum defined ecosystem as the basic functional unit of organisms and their environment, interacting with each other and within their own components. Nearly all ecosystems are dependent upon the flow of solar energy and finite pools of nutrients. Carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus and sulphur make up nearly all life on earth. The diversity of an ecosystem is a measure of the number of different species there, and how common each species is. Ecosystems are very complex and they can contain hundreds or even thousands of interacting species. Environment and eco-factorsThe structural and functional features, their size and composition are important characteristics of any ecosystem. The structural features include the biotic and abiotic components and the functional features include the functions performed i.e. food chains, webs, trophic levels, the flow of energy in the ecosystem, productivity, biogeochemical cycles and ecosystem regulation.
Taming The Little Devils Within (A book dedicated to mental health and welfare)
The book 'Taming The Little Devils Within' is a practical book to help you (a reader) discover / measure / find out if you have any psychological issues, and if you have, then to what degree. This level of degree determines the course of treatment or counseling by experts. Even a headache could lead to psychological problems if not treated properly in time.
Although we are the masters of our mental health, yet we sometimes unknowingly, create conditions, which make us mentally unhealthy. To elaborate this issue Dr..Amit Abraham shares a case, which he had handled a few years back and explains through this perfect example how even a mentally healthy individual can invite, create and aggravate conditions, which adversely affect his psychological wellbeing. This case study is intended to help readers of the book 'Taming The Little Devils Within' to relate, identify and understand life-threatening conditions better and the necessity of timely psychological counseling or psychiatric treatment for leading a mentally healthy life.
The author says that aided by the developments in medical science and technology people world over have been able to conquer many of the physical ills, which had afflicted them for the past many centuries. Over these years humankind has made progress, but not without paying a price for all these accomplishments.
Today the majority is no longer a victim of famines and epidemics. The black plague though has been overpowered and eradicated but it seems to have been replaced now with a host of psychological plagues. These look subtle but are extremely lethal, spreading within like cancer, taking their toll slowly but surely. There is the worry, loneliness, disillusionment, and doubts. We are too engrossed chasing our dreams, blindly running through mazes and dark blind alleys or have lost our way in there. The lucky ones who have managed to find their way through seem not too contended with what they have ultimately achieved. This is what the mirage of modern existence is. In the end, all are equally besieged with the pangs of anxiety. No wonder this age is aptly called the Age of Anxiety.
Normalcy today has nearly become a myth. Mostly all of us are beset with seemingly endless personal and social problems. There have been wars, social unrest, economic recession, unemployment, personal grief, and many such psychosocial and economic problems, which have disrupted our life directly or indirectly affecting our mental wellbeing.
Darwin's law of survival of the fittest has moved from the jungle into the civilized population. There is constant pressure to succeed on the young child, escalating with each target he achieves. The steps on the ladder are infinite and no end for the human desires to satiate. The fulfilled desires soon become meaningless and newer unfulfilled ones constantly aggravate man's anxieties.
Look around you and you will find on every side anxious, unhappy, bewildered people who are missing the fulfillment of their best potential because they cannot achieve a satisfactory adjustment to problems that seem just too great. Smooth, effective functioning has been eclipsed by symptoms of personality maladjustment. In many cases, the stress of modern life takes its toll leading to psychiatric causality without the person actually becoming aware of.
In fact, after going through the book 'Taming The Little Devils Within', the reader would realize that a sharp dividing line between normal and abnormal behavior simply does not exist.
The statistics show that mental illness incapacitates more people than all other health problems combined. It may be a bitter fact but all of us, to some extent, show some of the other characteristics that deviate us from the normalcy mark. The abnormal behavior of ours may though be just a matter of degrees but the question does arise on "How normal are we"? The layman may not agree with what is being claimed here but the abnormal behavior is not only the extreme, bizarre, and sensational things that we see in mental hospitals and clinics. It also includes anxiety, depression, phobias, and moods, sleep disturbances, obsessive or compulsive behavior and many others. We all suffer from one or the other psychological problems during our lifespan yet claiming ourselves to be normal and mentally healthy individuals. It is lack of awareness, which makes things miserable for us. It is time that we wake up to this bitter reality and put in our conscious efforts for living a better mentally healthy and adjusted life.
The author has explained in vivid detail the dimensions of mental health, the origins of little devils, causes of abnormal behaviour, the devils of stress, mental fatigue, panic, anxiety, depression, phobias, sleep disorder, suspiciousness, irritability, forgetfulness, fearful dreams, mania, obsession, imaginary ailments, personality disorder and how to disarm and correct devils to become/remain mentally healthy.
While going through the book you need not be besieged by fears feeling that you are a deviant from the normal. Many people occasionally feel anxious, discouraged, and inadequate for days and months together. Their behavior is irrational, irritable and restless. They feel unduly fatigued, experience loss of appetite and have sleep disturbances. This, however, does not always indicate that they are neurotic. These symptoms can be the result of psychological stresses, which impinge upon such individuals due to various reasons. Almost everyone experiences feelings of insecurity and anxiety resulting from various life situations so your exhibited symptoms just make you a part of the larger world of normally deviant individuals.
Though most of us are minor deviants from normalcy, some may have crossed over the danger mark. This requires psychiatric and psychological intervention for diagnosis and treatment. It should not be treated lightly since delay will only cause harm.
While going through this book and doing evaluations/measurements if you feel that you are one of them then remember that mental illness is not a disgrace.
One final strong suggestion. Do not be reluctant to get professional help at the earliest. Your positive acceptance of problem/s will enable you to seek timely professional counseling so as to recover while the disorder is in the early stages. This action will prevent the elevation of difficulties.
Your treatment is for the betterment of your own wellbeing and that of your family.
